1.      Introduction

What is your impression of overseas? I think people have many impressions. I have various impressions naturally. So, it is said by non-Japanese people that Japanese people are polite, hard-working and shy. Japan is becoming more globalized and working harder at do international exchange these days. Tokyo was chosen to the host the 2020 Summer Olympics, so it is expected that many foreign tourists will come to Japan. They will be able to experience Japanese culture and know many things about Japan. After that, they may create a different feel to their impression of Japan and Japanese people and discover many new Japan and Japanese people.

I’m very interested in and like learning cultures from different countries, among them, I’m most interested in Canada, Canadian culture and Canadian people. My first impression of Canada was that it was large area and had a cold climate. Also, I just thought it was a more dangerous country than Japan and other countries outside of Japan were dangerous countries. Because I learned this information about Canada in school and there were many opportunities to watch bad news of those countries on TV in Japan. I didn’t know almost information about Canada before I enter my university.

When I was 3rd grade in my university, I studied abroad in Barrie, Ontario, Canada for six months. So, I experienced Canadian culture with Canadian people. Most Canadian people who I talked to said I would like to go to Japan because Japan has many good cultures and my impression of Japan and Japanese people are so good. When I heard that every time, it made me happy and I’m proud of Japan. But I didn’t have a detailed impression of Canada. So, I wondered what Japanese people much impression of Canada and their impression of Japan made me wanted to know relationship with Japan and Canada. From the above, I researched impression of Canada from Japanese people.

Also, my purposes of study are that I would like to examine what kind of situation that relationship with Japan and Canada and, about difference of impression and knowledge of Canada from the age and the environment. My methods of study are survey by questionnaire and literature searching.

  1. Relationship with Japan and Canada

There are a lot of different points in the case of comparing with Japan and Canada. For example, Country of Japan are small but them of Canada are large. The most different point is the amount of resource. The foreign relation was a chance to establish Japan consulate General in Vancouver in 1889. It is said that Japanese who visited Canada for the first time is fisherman in Nagasaki, and Canadian who immigrated to Japan for the first time are missionaries. So, one of the son of the missionaries introduced Japan literature in Canada. Both countries established an embassy each other because of signing of treaty of San Francisco in 1951 after World War 2.

Both countries are tiring as wide variety of politics, economy and culture based on common sense and friendly relations. Also, both countries are making efforts to keep development of economic viability, political cooperation and, Asian-pacific region.

The trade and economy relations of both countries is expanding steadily, and the trade and economy of Canada is one of the most important partners in Japan. Many Japanese company in Canada are employing Canadian people. On the other hand, Some Canadian company of car, information technology, bank and forest products industry are based in Japan. Canada exports an ore, a mineral fuel, and an oil to Japan. On the contrary, Japan exports an automobile, an automobile component, and an electric machine and goods.

Both countries agree to cooperate in peacekeeping, nonproliferation, humanitarian aid and counter disaster and Command cooperate with the Self-Defense Forces.

After Tohoku earthquake in March 2011, Canadian government expressed full cooperation to Japan, and gave blankets, dosimeter, and a radiation detector of hand carried.

And, both countries have human relationship and connection of both cultures. Also, both countries are interacting actively and widely.

Canada is popular study abroad destination and both students and teachers are interacting actively because there are many partnerships between Canada and Japan’s academic organization. Many Canadian are fan in Japanese cartoon and animation. On the contrary, Some Canadian musician is known to Japanese and that is receiving a lot of attention as all genre.

Many programs are doing to promote exchange between people in both countries. There are 75 cities that have a special tie of friendship, called sister cities in both local authority.

Both countries think valuable partner in international scene each other and the trend is growing more and more. And the political connection of both countries is complicated but both countries cooperate each other because both countries want to promote world peace and international understanding. Also, Japan is valuable partner in academic field for Canada. Especially, in terms of science and technological, both countries are doing various cooperation to make use of mutual strong points. The universities of both countries are concluding accord of academic exchange. Based on these, both countries use to innovation in technology and base of creation each other. And both countries

expand cooperation because of researcher of top level and get many profits by establishing specialized agency that promote study abroad to partner’s country.

  1. Conclusion

Through this study by questionnaire and literature searching, I was glad although very few Japanese people have been to Canada, a lot of Japanese people want to go to Canada. Overall, impressions of Canada as a country are “full of nature”, “big”, “cold”, “peaceful”, “safety”, and “convenient to live” from many respondents. There are a wide variety of Japanese people but impressions of Canada from them are so good. And, impressions of Canadian people are “friendly”, “talkative”, and expressive” according to them, so, impressions of Canadian people are so good. But some also said “I have no idea.”. These few Japanese people perhaps I think they don’t have opportunities to interact with Canadian people. And, most Japanese people don’t know Canadian foods. I didn’t know about Canadian foods before I have been to Canada, too. The impressions of Canadian foods are “sweet”, “strong taste”, “Western foods”, and “large” according to many Japanese people. About sightseeing in Canada, most Japanese people know “Niagara Falls”, and “Notre-Dame Basilica” but I surprised that most of them don’t know “Barrie city” where I studied abroad, and “CN Tower” in Toronto. And, many Japanese people got impression and knowledge of Canada from “class”, and “teachers” and from “Internet” according to the present fashion.

It seems many people know about Canada, reporting: “Canadian national flag”, “maple syrup” is famous in Canada, and there is “Niagara Falls” and several people know “winter sports” are famous such as an ice skating in Canada.

In summary, before I went to Canada, my impressions of it included: “large are”, “have a cold climate”, and “more dangerous country than Japan”. Now that I have studied Canada in detail, my impressions of it included: “safety”, and convenient to live” country, “so kind” and “friendly” people, and “large”, and “delicious” foods. I had same impression of Canada as everybody else before I went to Canada. But I changed impressions of it according to the opportunity that I studied abroad in Canada. I was looking forward to eating Canadian foods every time and I came to love Canada more and more and became precious country by myself.

Respondents who have been to and want to go to Canada have a lot of good impressions of Canada and know a lot of knowledge about Canada but respondents who don’t want to go to Canada have very few impressions of Canada and don’t know a lot of knowledge about Canada.

I think the reason that impressions of Canada from Japanese are good is impressions of both countries are good each other, and they have good relationships in economy, trade, politics and academic field each other. And, their good relationships are made up of interacting many time, and supporting each other.

I hope that Japanese students have a lot of opportunities that have an interest about Canadian cultures, and interact in various fields each other more and more. And, I believe that Japanese people who have an interest about Canada and want to go to Canada increase. I hope that a lot of Japanese people will go to Canada and have different impressions of Canada. And, my dream is that a lot of people in both countries support positively each other when it happens to something.

I’d like to thank everyone who answered my questionnaire.

During my four years of study at the International University of Kagoshima I made many friends and enjoyed playing in the Brass Band. I had an opportunity to study overseas at Georgian College. I started hard with my classmates. We traveled to do sightseeing in Kagoshima Prefecture. Our seminar was enjoyable. I give special thanks to my parents for supporting my studies at the International University of Kagoshima. In future I will continue to do my best. I wish good luck to the younger members in my seminar class and hope they will continue my studies on Canada and discover why so many Japanese people hold good impressions of Canada.
